Volunteer and community fire departments have protected the residents of Surry County for generations. These departments are more than buildings and fire trucks—they are local organizations built through decades of taxpayer support, community fundraising, grants, donations, and thousands of hours of volunteer service.

Today, Surry County residents are being asked to pay attention to a proposed Fire Services Agreement that includes provisions affecting the future ownership and control of local fire department assets.

Surry County fire departments believe that local fire tax dollars should remain dedicated to supporting the local departments that provide emergency services to their communities. The stations, apparatus, equipment, and facilities serving our citizens were developed through the investment and support of local taxpayers and community members.

What We Are Asking

We respectfully ask the Surry County Board of Commissioners to:

Remove the asset transfer provision from the proposed Fire Services Agreement.

Preserve local funding for community fire departments.

Ensure that local fire tax dollars continue to support local fire protection services.

Protect the long-term sustainability of volunteer and community fire departments throughout Surry County.

Every day, local firefighters respond to fires, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, severe weather events, and other emergencies. Quick response times and strong community-based fire protection depend on maintaining well-equipped local departments with stable funding and local control.
